Bite-Sized Space News

Intuitive Machines Lander

Intuitive Machines' Odysseus spacecraft is currently enroute towards the Moon, representing a significant milestone for the company, NASA, and the commercial space sector. Odysseus launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket last week on February 15th, and has already performed a number of critical maneuvers, including establishing communication with Earth and testing its methalox-powered main engine, as well as sending back its first stunning images... 🤯🤯🤯

Intuitive Machines' first lunar lander (of three contracted through NASA’s CLPS program) aims to achieve a soft landing on February 22 at the near-polar Malapert A crater, a feat that carries immense significance for the future of lunar exploration as they would be the first commercial entity to achieve this. Be sure to tune in on Thursday afternoon for livestream coverage from Intuitive Machines.

Odysseus carries payloads from NASA's CLPS program and commercial partners, marking a collaborative effort to advance scientific discovery and space technology. While anticipation and excitement surround this mission, it's essential to acknowledge the inherent risks and challenges involved in lunar exploration.

The history of previous non-governmental Moon landings serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and uncertainties inherent in such endeavors. Three previous non-governmental Moon landings have failed; including the Israel-based SpaceIL’s Beresheet, ispace Japan’s Hakuto-R, and the recent failure of the US-based Astrobotic Peregrine.

MoonDAO has a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Intuitive Machines and is in the beginning stages of potential collaborations and activities. MoonDAO had the opportunity to visit Intuitive Machines in-person in Houston and saw Odysseus awaiting shipment to Florida for launch. Steve Altemus, CEO and President of Intuitive Machines, was also a prior guest on MoonDAO Live and discussed this very mission. Definitely give it a listen before the landing attempt!

China’s Chang’e 6

China, not to be left out of the lunar lander fun, has announced the launch of a lunar mission slated for May 2024. Named Chang'e-6, this would be the first lunar sample-return mission to the moon's far side. With a primary phase expected to span approximately 53 days, Chang'e-6 aims to retrieve soil and rock samples never before accessed from this unique lunar region.

The mission's target destination is the southern region of the Apollo crater within the vast South Pole-Aitkin (SPA) impact basin on the lunar far side. Here, scientists hope to unearth invaluable insights into lunar composition, including potential samples of mantle material ejected during the formation of the SPA basin. Equipped with specialized tools, the Chang'e-6 lander will collect up to two kilograms of lunar far-side material.

Continuing the tradition of honoring the Chinese moon goddess Chang'e, this spacecraft follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, poised to expand humanity's understanding of the lunar landscape, its rich geological history, and paves the way for future lunar exploration and the new race to the Moon.

Upcoming Launches

  • SpaceX Falcon 9 | HTS-113BT on Tue Feb 20, 2024 3:11 PM GMT-5 from SLC-40, Cape Canaveral SFS, Florida, USA
  • SpaceX Falcon 9 | Starlink Group 7-15 on Wed Feb 21, 2024 11:24 PM GMT-5 from SLC-4E, Vandenberg SFB, California, USA
  • CASC Long March 5 on Fri Feb 23, 2024 6:30 AM GMT-5 from LC-101, Wenchang Space Launch Site, China
