Year of the Rabbit

Published about 1 year ago • 4 min read

Hey Reader,

Welcome back to Mooney Monday! We know that things have been relatively quiet lately, but we want to assure you that we have been hard at work behind the scenes as we gear up for everything to come in 2023. Over the past week, we had a MoonDAO delegation in Davos for the World Economic Forum, participating in various space and crypto events with attendees from all over the globe.

Also, many of our contributors in Asia are celebrating the Lunar New Year, which is the most important holiday in China. It is a fitting holiday for MoonDAO as well, given our sizeable community in China, and the obvious connection to the Moon and the lunar calendar. This year is the Year of the Rabbit, which is associated with good luck, prosperity, and longevity.

In Chinese culture, there is a legend about a rabbit on the Moon who is said to be the companion of the Moon goddess, who is also associated with the lunar calendar and the celebration of the lunar new year. The image of the rabbit on the Moon is also a symbol of longevity and immortality, and some say that the shadows of the moon resemble a rabbit. The Moon Rabbit was even discussed during the Apollo 11 landing!

We at MoonDAO are honored to have such a diverse community that brings together people from different cultures and backgrounds. The celebration of the Lunar New Year is a time for families to come together, and we at MoonDAO see our community as an extended family working together towards a common goal, united by a love of space and seeing humanity expand into the cosmos.

As we enter the Year of the Rabbit, we look forward to continuing to work together to build a brighter future for our community and the greater Web3 community. With the support and participation of MoonDAO members like you, we are confident that we can achieve great things in the coming year. Thank you for your continued interest and involvement in MoonDAO!

Green Comet: The “Green Comet” C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is rapidly approaching perigee, its closest point to Earth, making it easier to spot in the night sky. The comet was first discovered by astronomers using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) at the Palomar Observatory in California in March 2022. It is expected to reach its brightest magnitude in early February as it approaches perigee on February 1st. The comet could be visible to the naked eye under the right dark sky conditions, but binoculars or a telescope will make it easier to spot. It's located in the northern skies and can be seen just after sunset as a faint greenish glow.

Starship: SpaceX is nearing the critical test phase of its launch campaign for its massive Starship vehicle, and today the company is conducting a "wet dress rehearsal" test at its launch site in South Texas in Boca Chica. This test is essential to demonstrate the safe fueling of so much propellant at once and it is one of the biggest milestones remaining ahead of an orbital launch attempt which could take place in a month or two. The wet dress rehearsal is a key part of the test campaign to ensure the rocket clears the launch site so that it does not damage valuable infrastructure, SpaceX is proceeding more cautiously toward its orbital test flight. If the test goes well, the next step is expected to be a full static firing of all 33 Raptor engines on Booster 7.

Space Trivia Answer: B) Chang'e is the Chinese goddess associated with the Moon, she is said to live on the Moon after she stole the elixir of immortality from her husband, Houyi the archer (read more). Chang'e is also the name of a series of lunar exploration missions launched by the China National Space Administration, named after the goddess. The program began in 2007 with the launch of Chang'e 1, which was followed by Chang'e 2 & 3, and Chang'e 4 became the first spacecraft to land on the far side of the Moon in 2019 and Chang'e 5, which successfully collected and returned samples from the lunar surface in 2020.

These missions have provided valuable scientific data and images of the Moon, and have also demonstrated China's growing capabilities in space exploration. In the future, China plans to continue the Chang'e program with the launch of Chang'e 6, 7, and 8, which will focus on the study of the lunar polar regions, the construction of a lunar research station, and the development of lunar resources.
